It's not the fact that H&M is having 'Recycle Week' the same week as Fashion Revolution that is so bothersome, like it seems to be angering so many. That seems natural, and could also help the Fashion Rev movement.
That doesn't mean we aren't bothered though! H&M is one of the biggest contributors to fast fashion in the WORLD. This week, H&M is collecting clothing from customers and recycling it, which may seem like a nice gesture, but in reality it is simply a way to encourage their customers to BUY MORE! Customers who donate a bag of clothes, receive a coupon for 30% their entire purchase!
I have read people empathize with H&M as they argue that "the technology and bandwidth is not yet there for more sustainable production". I would like to respectfully, but strongly disagree: it is the responsibility of H&M to push the envelope...to drive the market here and make it known that they are a willing and wanting buyer of more sustainable solutions!
H&M is not yelling, screaming and crying for new sustainable sources. They have the opportunity to make huge changes in the world, but they need to want it. And if they don't want it on their own, their customers can always demand it.
